The inositol phospholipids.

چکیده
T h e dried crystals melted with decomposition a t about 215”. The substance is probably an organic acid but we have not yet had time to examine it thoroughly.” (1) In this modest way inositol seems to have made its first appearance as a lipid constituent. Later in 1930, Anderson and Roberts (2) established the identity of their crystals, obtained from a phospholipid present in avian tubercle bacilli, as myo-inositol. The occurrence of inositol in a plant lipid, soybean oil, was first reported in 1939 by Klenk and Sakai (3). Three years later Folch and Woolley (4) described an inositol lipid in brain. The subsequent work of Folch, who coined the name phosphoinositide, stimulated the much wider recent interest in such lipids. Their chemistry has been reviewed by Folch (5) and by Folch and LeBaron (6).

Dictyostelium uses ether-linked inositol phospholipids for intracellular signalling.
Inositol phospholipids are critical regulators of membrane biology throughout eukaryotes. The general principle by which they perform these roles is conserved across species and involves binding of differentially phosphorylated inositol head groups to specific protein domains. This interaction serves to both recruit and regulate the activity of several different classes of protein which act on ...
متن کاملThe Actions of Ca 2 + Ionophores on Rat Basophilic ( 2 H 3 ) Cells Are Dependent on Cellular ATP and Hydrolysis of Inositol Phospholipids
Calcium-specific ionophores are used widely to stimulate Ca2+-dependent secretion from cells on the assumption that permeabilization of the cell membranes to Ca2+ ions leads to a rise in concentration of cytosolic Ca2+ ([Ca”+li), which in turn serves as a signal for secretion. In this way, events that precede mobilization of Ca2+ ions via receptor stimulation are bypassed. One such event is tho...
متن کاملStructural studies on the myo-inositol phospholipids of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (var. bovis, strain BCG).
During the last few years, the myo-inositol-containing phospholipids have elicited considerable interest from biochemists because of their possible dynamic functions in cell membranes. Parallel with this interest in function has been a concerted attack on the problem of elucidating the detailed structures of these complex substances. In general, the more definitive results have come from the la...
متن کاملInositol phospholipids: Translocation, translocation, translocation …
The pleckstrin homology (PH) domains of a number of proteins have been found to interact in vitro with inositol phospholipids; recent experiments show that these interactions may be important in directing protein translocation to specific parts of the cell following stimulus-induced lipid breakdown or synthesis.
متن کاملChanges in phospholipids of Saccharomyces cerevisiae associated with inositol-less death.
Two inositol-requiring strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae were examined for changes in levels of phospholipids occurring after inositol deprivation. Lack of inositol results in loss of cell viability (inositol-less death) and in very large increases in two phospholipid precursors, phosphatidic acid and CDP-diacylglycerol; the accumulation of other glycerophospholipids continues for a considera...
